Feeling uninspired? Tired of doing the same things, the same way, day after day? Well then, it’s time for a creativity boost! Here’s seven ways to quickly boost your creativity – and we don’t just mean art. You can get creative about work, house work, family or leisure time.
1. Love your Curiosity
“Curiosity killed the cat” we’re warned when we’re young. A lot of us think being curious is frivolous – a waste of time when there’s more important things to do. Actually, being curious is a great way to inspire new, creative ideas. So the next time you catch yourself wondering about something that sparks your curiosity, instead of pushing it aside because it’s not ‘important’ , take a few minutes to enjoy that spark, then follow your thoughts to see where they take you.
2. Take a Chance
If you want to boost your creativity, you have to be willing to take a chance now and then. By trying something new and pursuing it – even when you think you have no talent – you force yourself to build new skills and stretch your skills in new directions. Now that’s creative.
3. Change your Point of View
“Variety is the spice of life” it’s true. But we all have routines that never change. So the next time you’re faced with a routine responsibility, try doing it a little differently. You can take a new route to the store, re-order the way you clean your house, change your work space so you’re facing a different direction. Then, if you really want a creative mind-challenge try these things: hang all your photos upside-down for awhile to see what new thoughts come to mind; write a letter with your non-dominant hand; stand on your head or hang upside down for a couple of minutes (only if you can do this safely!); or laugh out loud for a few minutes – whether you feel like laughing or not.
4. Stop and Smell the Roses
Creativity has two parts – active and passive. When you’re on the go all the time, your mind doesn’t have time to let things bubble. So rather than reading the paper the next time you have a cup of coffee or watching TV over breakfast, try sitting quietly, listening to the sounds around you or just looking at a plant to discover things you didn’t notice before. You’ll be surprised at what ideas come when you give your mind a little time relax.
5. Scribble
Whether you’ve got an artist’s gift or two left feet for hands, giving yourself ten minutes a day with pen (or pencil, crayon, chalk or paint brush) in hand to just doodle and scribble on a page will kick-start your right brain (the seat of creative thinking) into action.
6. Make a Commitment
Whether you feel confident or not, simply telling yourself you’re willing to try new things – or do old things in new ways – can give you a fresh burst of creative inspiration for all parts of your life.
7. Remember: Practice Makes . . .
Well, perfect practice makes perfect habit, but when you practice looking at your life in different ways or give yourself the time to try a new, creative hobby, you’ll find creativity becomes a way of life.
We’re excited to hear how these techniques boost your creativity, so please let us know which ones work best for you and what they’ve inspired!
